现任海南医学院公共卫生与全健康国际学院院长和教授，是国家重点研发计划“主动健康和老龄化科技应对”重点专项健康体检大数据云平台构建项目负责人和首席科学家，是国家自然科学基金重大研究计划集成项目《面向人群健康和重大疾病的大数据集成共享平台研究及示范应用》骨干专家，是国家中医药综合改革示范区建设专家咨询委员会专家委员，作为专家参与《中国心血管病一级预防指南》、《真实世界研究指南》、《老年人能力评估师国家职业技能标准》等、牵头完成了《新华指数.健康体检大数据糖尿病地图》、《新华指数.健康体检大数据心血管健康报告》等编写工作。新冠爆发期间，撰写了中国最早的新冠预防指南《家庭预防新冠病毒指引20条》，作为流行病学专家参与国家卫健委、工程院、财政部和部分省市的疫情防控工作，参与100多篇科普文章的撰写和采访，其中部分文章浏览量上亿人次。目前成功申请国内外近一亿元科研资金和20多亿元生物产业建设资金。
就职海南医学院之前，曾任北京大学医学部教师（1993），卫生部公务员，参与组织国家疾病防控综合计划管理、消灭脊髓灰质炎和计划免疫以及慢性病预防控制工作（1994）。辞职后就读于华盛顿大学，研究妊娠疾病的预防以及非洲传染病危险因素等（2001），取得流行病学公共卫生硕士学位和国际健康项目证书。之后在哈佛大学攻读博士学位研究糖尿病等代谢疾病人群中肿瘤风险增加的机理和生活方式预防（2004），博士毕业后直接就职于弗吉尼亚医学院任终身系列助理教授、博士导师及博士后导师，并建立癌症幸存者队列研究（2013）。之后任葛兰素史克(GSK)流行病学总监和最高学术职位Senior Fellow，领导或参与了十余个药物上市前后的研究设计，通过医学循证，创造了新药上市7个月进医保的记录，并发明用大数据寻找新药（2018）。之后，A股上市公司美年大健康副总裁和首席科学家、就任北京大学医学部公共卫生学院特聘教授和北京大学医学部美年公众健康研究院执行院长等职位（2021）。
宁毅教授作为海南引进杰出人才，着力于培养杰出公共卫生人才，根据海南自贸岛社会需求，聚焦于数据循证指导医药和营养实践，促进多病防治和康复。
